Sex: it’s been trending since the dawn of mankind.

It’s a biological imperative all humans share, regardless of gender, race, or identification. For something universal, sex is shadowed by an enormous amount of stigma and controversy. There seem to be more concerns regarding sex and sexuality than people having sex.

The sex-positivity movement addresses some of these concerns, a prominent one being the historical lack of emphasis on female sexuality. New social attitudes have demanded technology that is inclusive of female sexuality. By inclusive technology, I mean sex toys designed with female anatomy and pleasure in mind. People with vaginas want to cum too!

Sex toys are a small part of the booming industry of sexual wellness and technology. Sex tech contributes to liberating female sexuality by creating toys that allow people with vaginas to self-discover. Self-discovery is the most undervalued component of self-care and sexual wellness.

Sex toys are tools that allow us to better connect and understand our anatomies. Their existence gives us permission to explore ourselves and learn what makes our toes curl. And some toys do this better than others. Intuitively playful in their product design, Osuga’s products, Cuddly Bird and G-Spa, evoke the innocence and sweetness of self-discovery.

Cuddly Bird: Product Review

Snapseed 4.jpg

Cuddly Bird is an award-winning clitoral stimulator that relies on high-frequency sonic pulsating technology to emulate a sucking motion. Vibration that feels like suction is where I live and die, metaphorically, of course. Every vagina responds differently to different stimuli. Osuga designed Cuddly Bird with varying preferences in mind.

Cuddly Bird’s directional clitoris stimulator is direct but not pinpointed, which is perfect for me. The clitoris is a sensitive ball of nerves; I can’t handle any pinpointed precision on my clitoris. However, Cuddly Bird has a secondary setting where the toy’s body vibrates if you’re really sensitive. You can press the toy body against your clitoris for a dispersed and subtler stimulation.

Cuddly Bird’s clitoral vibrating function has three different speeds. The toy’s exterior body vibration has four different speeds, with the last one being a pulsing vibration. Now, both of these features cannot be used simultaneously; it’s one or the other. Three to four speeds might not sound like enough, but trust me, it is. It’s a powerful vibrator.

My first impression of Cuddly Bird was how adorably thoughtful the entire product design was, from the packaging down to the charging units. When I first unboxed it, the canary yellow toy cradled in its clear cage drew my eye. It’s visually metaphorical to Osuga’s mission statement of freeing womxn from the shame and stigma of exploring their sexuality. Cuddly Bird, quite literally, comes caged. Your playing with it frees it from its confines. As an artist, I appreciate the thoughtfulness and unity of mission and design.

I chose pastel yellow, though the toy is available in two other colors: pastel blue and pastel pink. Named after an animal universally recognized as cute, along with pastel packaging, the toy appeals to innocence.

The toy is reminiscent of the innocence of childhood discovery. Remember how magical everything was in childhood? Children have the uncanny ability to turn the most mundane things into adventure and tap into the magic of discovery because they aren’t concerned with shame and ‘should.’

Holding Cuddly Bird in my hand, I felt emotional and playful. I giggled at how soft and pliable it felt in my hand. Honestly, it has one of the most soothing silicone textures I’ve ever felt. The silicone body also makes for easy cleaning.

It’s ergonomically designed for womxn in mind: small and compact to fit comfortably in a womxn’s hand. I’m a petite woman with small hands and short fingers. I have to two-hand hold most things, including my phone. I appreciate that I can comfortably cradle this toy in one hand, which means I have a free hand to get devious during playtime. It’s waterproof, though not submersible in water. You can use it in the shower, but not the pool.

My favorite part of the product design is the charging system. Cuddly Bird’s charging ‘cage’ is a magnetic seat and transparent cover. When I plugged in the USB cable to charge my Cuddly Bird, the charging station started to glow bright yellow! It’s a nightlight! Not only is that practical, but discreet! If you didn’t know what you were looking at, you would think it was just a cute nightlight. This nightlight could double as mood lighting to set the tone during partner play.

Speaking of discretion, for as powerful as the toy’s vibration function is, it’s incredibly quiet, precisely 50dB! Someone who lives with roommates or shares space with another person would appreciate the toy’s overall discretion.

With a 7-day return policy, which is generous considering the nature of the products, and a 1-year warranty, I have a feeling we’ll see Osuga’s line expand very quickly…

I am impressed with Osuga’s debut product, Cuddly Bird. Sleek, soft, playful, and practical Cuddly Bird is a competitive and competent toy that should be on your shelf.

G-Spa: Product Review

FullSizeRender 12.jpg

Osuga’s “G-Spa” is a dual clitoral and g-spot stimulator. Innocuously shaped like a seal or rubber ducky, G-spa, like Cuddly Bird, captures the playful innocence of self-discovery.

Keeping the same thoughtfulness of design, G-Spa is considerate of female anatomy. Historically, sex toys for women have been designed by men. That translated into sex toys looking optically appealing, a.k.a. phallically shaped, but didn’t always hit the right spots. Women don’t need a girthy or large phallic thing to experience pleasure. Sometimes size is counterintuitive to female pleasure.

G-spa’s curved body is ergonomically spaced to actually hit your g-spot and not your cervix. G-spa’s curved tail is sleek and pliable, which allows for easy and painless insertion. The gentleness of insertion is a much-needed deviation from the firm plastic toys made in the prehistoric era, a.k.a pre-sextech. The curved tail is also highly malleable. You can maneuver or MacGiver it fluidly to accommodate various vulva sizes during play. The curved tail hooks slightly at the end and blooms in an ovular shape for increased stimulation on the g-spot.

The toy’s curved body doubles practically for holding onto the toy during play, whether you’re using the clitoral component or the g-spot massager. The toy is compact and minimalist, allowing for the smaller hands of a womxn to easily handle. G-spa’s body is made of silky smooth silicone making it easy to clean and waterproof, but again, like Cuddly Bird, not rated for spelunking adventures.

Now, let’s talk about the vibrating functions: the g-spot massager has seven different settings; high-frequency vibrations and pulsing vibrations that change frequency. The clitoral stimulator uses the same sonic pulse technology as Cuddly Bird to mimic a sucking sensation. The clitoral vibrator has three speeds. Also coming in at 50 dB, G-spa does not contribute to noise pollution and keeps the discretion of Cuddly Bird, making it silent but deadly.

Unlike Cuddly Bird, G-spa’s vibrating functions can be used simultaneously. However, the only flaw in the product design is the toy isn’t designed for simultaneous dual stimulation, meaning while both vibrations can be on, it targets either your g-spot or your clit, but not both.

I would love to see the next model incorporate a dual stimulation function to make this toy absolutely mind-blowing. Though not every person enjoys dual stimulation, it can elicit a rather violent response. This toy is perfect for the person who doesn’t want to contemplate whether they blacked out from cumming so hard. That being said, because of the toy’s malleability, I could have it inside me and push the toy’s head against my clit for stimulation. It wasn’t as directional as the clitoral port, but this variation offered a subtler sensation covering a broader surface area. I orgasmed, so it definitely works.

All in all, I was impressed by G-spa. Versatile for solo or partner play, easily manageable, and designed with vaginas in mind, it’s a winner.

My experience playing with Osuga’s products was emotional. I giggled, I smiled, I was reminded of how empowering it is to explore my body. Womxn and people with vaginas haven’t always been encouraged to self-explore. Shame has closely followed female sexuality. When you feel ashamed, you don’t feel empowered to explore.

The sweetness of discovery can be cultivated in adulthood. But first, we need to shed the things that do not serve us, like shame. And toys like Cuddly Bird and G-spa inspire you to do just that - explore your pleasure, your birthright.
